Following his ‘lightbulb’ moment at a skincare conference, Dr David Heath was supported by the Royal Society of Engineering and Scottish Enterprise to test the market, refine the business case and gain core skills to launch Cutitronics. In January 2014, Cutitronics was incorporated and since then a lot has happened for us.
We’re taking time to reflect on our phenomenal journey and sharing our top 5 milestones from our first 5 years.
Sharing the vision
Soon after establishing Cutitronics, Dr David was announced as ERA Entrepreneur of the Year, in recognition of his outstanding entrepreneurial research in the field of electro-technology. Here, he received a development fund to progress his skincare device technology, build the core team and establish the board. Among other things, this grant allowed him to complete technical feasibility and start the consultative design process.
As David welcomed new team members, Cutitronics won awards at Scottish Edge and gained further support from the Royal Academy of Engineering and ERA Foundation Fellowship. The business also moved into its first office. A small office with no Wi-Fi that could just about fit a couple of people and their laptops – meaning coffee shops and living rooms were often the locations for meetings as the team grew.
After a long time considering investors and a trip to Wall Street NYC, David realised the importance of building company investment on home soil, looking not just for investment but a long-term partnership. A significant milestone for Cutitronics was our introduction to FTSE 100 company Croda International PLC. - a company with great values, team, expertise and market reach. The strategic partnership was announced in 2017, propelling Cutitronics ambitious growth and development plans.
Moving premises and growing the team
Our partnership with Croda led to the recruitment of many highly experienced team members, providing new market access, new insight and a prototype device powered by CutiTron™ technology. We also relocated to another building on Scottish Enterprise Technology Park. This time it’s one big enough to grow with us and our ambitions whilst still offering great coffee and sofas like we’re used to!
In April of 2018, we unveiled our first prototype device and digital technology platform at in-Cosmetics Global, held in Amsterdam. Visitors were given a glimpse of how the connected, intelligent device (with CutiTron™ technology inside) could look. A prototype App and detailed Back-Office System was also on show to highlight the benefits of having a truly adaptive and personalised service for the consumer.
In our sixth year, we are looking forward to unveiling more about our device capabilities. Having delivered on Croda’s expectations we were excited to announce, at the beginning of the year, the continued investment and strategic partnership with them. This provides us with the ability to scale, add pace to growing our team and putting the resources in place that we need for the next exciting stage of our journey. Our next major event is joining Croda this April at in-Cosmetics Global Paris, where we will be presenting our patented suite of technologies, the next generation prototype device, personalised app and back-office system.
