In 2021, it’s all about effective skincare. As Covid-19 continues to impact our daily routines and rituals, a great skincare routine has the power not only to give us healthy glowing skin, but to enhance our general wellbeing, boost our mood, and provide a prime outlet for self-care and relaxation.
Importantly, an effective skincare routine can also enhance our perceptions of ourselves, improving confidence and self-esteem. With 60% of women ditching make-up as a result of the pandemic, and instead embarking on a skincare journey, it’s possible that Covid-19 could bring with it a new standard of beauty; with self-acceptance at the core.
Here are my top tips for making your new skincare routine stick in 2021.
1. Educate yourself
Thanks to advancements in social media and digital technology, we are now blessed with a wealth of quality information at our fingertips, enabling us to have personal conversations with global brands, research our specific skin types and find the products that are just right for us. This has only been fast tracked by the pandemic, with many brands diversifying their online offerings to include video swatches, online consultations and product match questionnaires.
The first and most important step in building a great skincare routine is identifying and understanding your specific skin type. Did you know that within the well-known categories of dry, normal and oily/combination skin, there are further subcategories? And that depending on which kind of dry or oily skin you may have, the solutions may be completely different from one another? There are many online resources out there to help identify which skin type you have. Find out what your skin really needs and building the rest of your routine will become a whole lot easier.
2. Go shopping
While many physical stores continue to face temporary closures, top beauty brands have gone above and beyond to improve their online offerings. Brands such as Charlotte Tilbury and Clarins have taken their beauty counter expertise online by opening virtual shopping stores, allowing you to access your favourite brands and find product benefits and information all in one place. Identifying your favourite scents or finding brands that align with your values can help build a selection which works just for you. And remember, higher price doesn’t always mean better quality!
3. Don’t be afraid to ask
Having great skin doesn’t need to be a secret. If you meet someone with glowing skin, ask them what they use! Reach out to friends and family to find out more about their favourite products - they might just become your new skincare staples.
This point also applies to skincare brands. Beauty brands are continually improving their digital offerings to better connect with you, their consumer - especially when they can’t meet you face to face. In place of a beauty counter consultation, set up a virtual consultation with a brand expert to find out more about their product ranges. Ask if they can send you some samples before you buy. Broadening your knowledge as much as you can means you’ll be far more likely to end up with a skincare routine you truly love.
It's worth noting that the relationship between you and the brand doesn’t end at the checkout. Tried a new product for a month and it still isn’t working for you? Let them know! A good brand will liaise with you about your concerns, offer advice on optimal application and suggest some more tailored alternatives until you find what works best for you.
4. Stick with it
For many, including me, this is the tricky part. Once you’ve discovered your perfect product selection, it’s time to build a routine you can stick to.
Before I came to realise the incredible benefits of effective skincare for my general wellbeing and confidence, sticking to a regular routine was all about results. The best skincare products are designed to produce optimal results in the long term, much like a balanced diet and regular exercise. You need to be prepared to wait at least a month to start seeing the results you desire. Regime adherence can be the biggest stumbling block for consumers on a skincare journey, but you will not see results without consistency.
5. Give tech a try
As an increasingly innovative industry, global skincare brands are not only rapidly expanding resources such as e-commerce websites and social media platforms but investing in breakthrough technologies too.
Apps are a great example. Easily downloaded to our phones or tablets, digital applications allow us to browse a brand’s catalogue of products from the comfort of our sofas. Even better? Some are now built with regime trackers, allowing us to log our daily products and optimal use. If, like me, you’re likely to let your routine slip on a busy morning or at the weekend, a push notification or alert will get you back on track and help you to see those all-important results.
With so many products out there, it can be tricky to find the right regime for you. But by researching your specific skincare requirements, selecting products you truly love, and enlisting the help of brands (and their newly-launched tech), you’ll be well on your way to creating a routine that sticks in 2021.
